American Library Association Community Engagement
The American Library Association (ALA) has selected the Suffolk Public Library as one of 10 public libraries that will undergo an intensive 18-month, team-based community engagement training program as part of the Libraries Transforming Communities (LTC) Public Innovators Cohort. The cohort, selected through a highly competitive peer-reviewed application process, is part of ALA’s LTC initiative, a national plan to help librarians strengthen their role as core community leaders and change-agents.

Award of CALEA Accreditation
On March 22, 2014, the Suffolk Police Department received formal recognition by the acceptance of their award at the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) conference which took place in Garden Grove, California. This award comes after several years of intense review, construction, and modification to policies, procedures and practices which are the building blocks of the department’s foundation.

Clean Community Commission Grant Award
Keep Virginia Beautiful (KVB) is awarding “30 Grants In 30 Days” from September 15, 2014 to October 14, 2014. The Suffolk Clean Community Commission has been awarded a $1,000 grant in the Recycling Category. This KVB grant program focuses greater resources and attention on organizations and individual localities throughout the Commonwealth and how they are addressing the issues of litter prevention, recycling, waste reduction, beautification and education.

Excellence in Financial Reporting
The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Suffolk Finance Department by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

Excellence in Youth Sports Award
Suffolk Parks and Recreation Athletic Programs are known for providing opportunities for youth to learn about teamwork, improve their athletic skills, and achieve overall fitness at the same time. The National Association of Youth Sports has recognized Suffolk Parks and Recreation Lil Sports Program with an Excellence in Sports Award for being one of the top 5 best youth sports programs in the country for ages 4 to 5. The Lil Sports Program covers the Lil Dribblers, Lil Kickers, and Lil Pom-Poms activities and was chosen out of a group of over 100 submissions.

International Ava Digital Gold Award
The City of Suffolk Media and Community Relations Department has been awarded a Gold Award in the 2014 Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) International AVA Digital Awards Competition for the “2013 Suffolk City Council Retreat Video”. The Gold Award is presented to those entries judged to exceed the high standards of the industry norm with only 16% of entries receiving gold award status.

John T. Hanna Drive Safe Hampton Roads Award
The Suffolk Police Department has been honored as the recipient of the 2014 John T. Hanna Drive Safe Hampton Roads Award for Law Enforcement Initiatives. The Suffolk Police Department was recognized for their implementation of various programs during the 2013/2014 calendar year.

National Night Out Event Named Tops in the Nation
The City of Suffolk’s National Night Out Event brings out the best in our City’s citizens, neighborhoods, civic groups, businesses, City employees, and City public safety personnel. The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) awarded Suffolk’s 2014 National Night Out Celebration with their top national honor among communities with a population of 50,000 to 99,000 residents (Category 3). This award marks the third time the City of Suffolk has been first in the nation (2008, 2009, and 2014) and the 9th straight year the City of Suffolk has placed in the top 5 in the Nation for National Night Out.

Top Fundraising Team for Relay for Life
The City of Suffolk has received a number one ranking thanks to City employees giving back to their community. The City was the top fundraising team at Suffolk’s American Cancer Society Rockin’ Relay for Life event held May 16th and May 17, 2014.
