Fix-It Fairs, also called Repair Cafés, are cropping up around the U.S. and internationally and strive to bring together “fixers” with skills to repair various items and community members who have items in need of repair. Fixers may help repair lamps, vacuum cleaners, small furniture pieces, radios, clothing items, jewelry, small appliances, and bicycles.
757 Creative ReUse Center, in partnership with Keep Suffolk Beautiful, and Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, will host their inaugural Fix-It Fair on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at the Western Branch Community Center from 11am to 3pm.
757 Creative ReUse Center President, Beth Dryer says, “We are happy and excited to partner with the City of Chesapeake and Keep Suffolk Beautiful for this Fix-It Fair. These types of events provide a convenient way for people to make their broken items seem new and usable again. It brings the community together, reduces waste and promotes reuse”. Along with recycling, habits that reduce and reuse help conserve landfill space and enhance the quality of our environment.
How to Participate
Interested participants must register their broken item for at a specific time slot through SignUp Genius.
Once registered, an event coordinator will follow up to request more details and photos of the item.
Due to COVID-19, participants will be asked to drop their item off at their confirmed time and will be alerted when the item is ready for pick, typically within 45 minutes.
Want to be a “Fixer”?
You don’t have to have a Mechanical Engineering degree or be a NASA scientist, but if you’re a “fixer” of things like jewelry, clothing, bicycles, small furniture or appliances, your talents are needed. If you would like to help at this inaugural fix-it community event, please complete the interest form.
Selected Fixers will receive a monetary stipend for their time. Many tools and supplies will be available to use onsite. Fixers will be appropriately spaced out in a large indoor space.
We ask that all participants, volunteers, fixers and staff wear a face covering and keep a safe distance from one another.
NOTICE: This event is free to registered participants.
The event hosts do not warrant any of the repairs, are not liable for any damage to or loss of property, and participation is at the risk of the participants.
