Fitness Programs

- Fall Family Fitness Program: Come join us for a great family friendly workout on Tuesdays and Thursdays this Fall. The entire family will be able to workout together and learn exercises that they can do together at home. We will be doing calisthenics and utilizing different pieces of equipment depending on the instructor’s choice for the workout of the day. Conducted at East Suffolk Recreation Center.

- Fit Factory: This interval training class is everything you need to stay encouraged, engaged, and moving! Conducted at Whaleyville Recreation Center.

- Fitness Equipment Orientation: Orientations for fitness equipment are voluntary and last approximately 45 minutes at East Suffolk and Whaleyville Recreation Center. Annual and Fitness Memberships are required. 

- Group Spin: Push yourself and others in a fun and challenging environment and burn calories while you're at it! Conducted at Whaleyville Recreation Center.

- Kidz in Motion: Kids are supposed to be on the move not sitting all day, so this class will do just that! Get them moving! Conducted in Whaleyville Recreation Center, we will have a fun environment to help create a lifelong appreciation and respect for fitness. We will include fundamentals of exercise as well as an introduction to exercise equipment. 

- Mobility and Stretching: Come join us 3 days per week to work on your mobility, balance, coordination, flexibility and kinesthetic awareness. Let us help you live a more mobile lifestyle with less tight muscles and immobile joints. You will definitely take a lot away from your first class to your last class and the results will speak for themselves. Conducted at East Suffolk Recreation Center.

- Nutrition 101: This 6-week course will cater to how to make positive decisions during the holidays and travel. Yes, you can enjoy your holidays and enjoy the food and fun. Let us show you how this Fall! Conducted at East Suffolk Recreation Center.

- Personal Training: Get a free assessment, then sign up for training sessions based on a personal program designed around your goals and results. By appointment only. Conducted both at East Suffolk and Whaleyville Recreation Center.

 - "Stay Strong" Senior Aerobics: This is an hour class for mature, active adults that targets not only muscular strength, muscular endurance, but also aids in improving cardiopulmonary and mental health. Conducted both at East Suffolk and Whaleyville Recreation Center.

Strength and Tone: This program incorporates light weights and high repetitions to help your body get a nice, toned figure. Conducted at Whaleyville Recreation Center.

- Stroller Fit: Calling all new parents! If you need something to do during the day while the other children are at school or just would like a great group of families to get healthier with check out our Stroller Fit class. You will learn a lot of exercises the family can do together at home while being able to get a good workout in during the class and socialize. Conducted at East Suffolk Recreation Center.

- Preschool Gym Time: It's time for toddlers to get active! Join us in celebrating Week of the Young Child for Preschool Gym Time. Toddlers ages 2-5 will enjoy learning songs, games, and arts & crafts. This event will allow toddlers the opportunity to learn socialization and creative skills through play. This event is sponsored by Suffolk Parks and Recreation and the Early Childhood Development Commission. Conducted at East Suffolk Recreation Center.

- Young at Heart Fitness: Come and join our 30 minute exercise class Young at Heart Fitness. This class is a total-body workout that focuses on improving coordination and balance for everyday tasks, increasing flexibility, joint stabilization and muscular strength. This class is appropriate for all fitness levels. Conducted at East Suffolk Recreation Center.

Athletics

- Adult Basketball:  Registration begins August 9 and ends September 2.

Season begins September 15. Games will be played on Wednesday night beginning at 6:30pm.

- Adult COED Softball:  Registration begins August 9 and ends September 2.

- Open Swim: Come enjoy some sunshine at open swim at Cypress Park Pool!

- Pickleball: Let's have some fun at our open play pickleball time!

- Spring League Sports - T-ball: Spring time calls for T-ball!

- Spring League Sports - Outdoor Youth Soccer: Spring time calls for Outdoor Soccer!

- Swim Lessons: Whether you are a beginner or intermediate, we have the class for you!

- Winter League Sports - Lil Dribblers: Basketball players in the making!

- Winter League Sports - Lil Pom Pom: Cheerleaders in the making!

- Winter League Sports - Tiny Kickz: Soccer players in the making!

- Tennis Lessons: Come out and learn from one of our tennis professionals!

Outdoor Recreation

- Archery Clinic: Would you like to learn archery? Now’s your chance! Bows, arrows, and arm guards will be provided. Participants should wear woods and weather appropriate clothing (including closed- toe shoes). Bring a water bottle and a small snack.

- Bird Watchers: Join us as we observe the number and details of birds found at the site of the former Driver Naval Radio Transmitting Facility. Bring your binoculars and spotting scopes if you own a pair. We will also have a limited supply available for use.

- Cedar Creek Kayak Tour: Come join Suffolk Parks and Recreation as we take you on a kayak tour down Cedar Creek. This trip will be a relaxing paddle up and down the creek. Bring a water bottle and a small snack.

- Canoe Clinic: Would your child like to learn how to canoe? Now’s their chance! Boat, life jacket, and paddle will be provided. Participants should come dressed in active wear, closed toe shoes, and sunscreen applied! Pack a water bottle and a small snack

- Galaxies Night Hike: Enjoy this 2-mile hike illuminated by starlight. We’ll also highlight the nocturnal wildlife we encounter along the way on our nighttime adventure. Dress warmly; flashlights will be provided. Intended for ages 8 and up.

- Nansemond River Canoe Tour: Come join Suffolk Parks and Recreation as we take you on a relaxing canoe paddle up and down the Nansemond River. This trip will begin and end at Constant’s Wharf, right behind the Downtown Hilton Hotel. 

- Outdoor Adventures Field Trip: You can discover an abundance of adventures in the Great Outdoors here in Suffolk! Our hands-on educational/recreational programs can include activities such as hiking, canoeing, archery, and wildlife viewing at venues such as Sleepy Hole, Bennet's Creek, Lone Star Lakes, and Lake Meade parks. Our park programs will provide unforgettable outdoor experiences and activities that are sure to captivate participants of all ages. 

- Outdoor Fitness: Join us for Outdoor Fitness classes at the beautiful Bennett's Creek. Classes are a 45-minute, efficient and fun blend of cardio and strength! It’s a great way to blend two great modalities of exercise together. All ability levels welcome! Be sure to bring a water bottle.

- Outdoor Recess: This program is designed to give your child a break from electronic screens and access to some fresh air and fun, explorative time outdoors. In this outdoor club, we will explore different wildlife topics and build young people’s confidence in outdoor spaces. Participants should wear woods and weather appropriate clothing (including closed-toe shoes) for exploring the trails. Bring a water bottle. Classes will be held rain or shine! 

- Outdoor Recess - Canoeing: This program is designed to give your child a break from electronic screens and access to some fresh air and fun, explorative time outdoors. During this particular session of our outdoor club, we will learn and exercise paddling skills on the lake and build young people’s confidence in outdoor spaces. Participants should wear water and weather appropriate clothing (including closed-toe shoes). Bring a water bottle and a small snack. 

- Outdoor Yoga: Join us for Outdoor Yoga classes at the beautiful Bennett's Creek Park. A 45- minute all levels Hatha class, created to meet all fitness levels and practices while enjoying the great outdoors. You may bring your personal yoga equipment and mat to use during class. Be sure to bring a water bottle

- Parent's Day Paddle:  In celebration of Parents’ Day, treat Mom or Dad to a relaxing paddle within the beautiful Crumps Mill Pond. Boat, life jacket, and paddle included.

- Standup Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga: This class is designed to teach you all the basics of SUP, safety, getting on the water, general SUP practice, and SUP Yoga! There will be three 75-minute class options each week, two on Saturdays and one on Sundays. All equipment included. This is an all-levels class. Be sure to bring a water bottle and towel. 

- Virginia Native Plants:   Join us and Suffolk Master Gardeners as we explore flora on the trails of Lone Star Lakes Park. We will observe and discuss the types of plants found native to our area.

East Suffolk and Whaleyville Recreation Center

- Adult Pool Tournament: East Suffolk Recreation Center will host it's annual pool tournament where we play to have fun!

- Books R Us: This program is designed to reinforce an appreciation of literature by discovering new authors they may enjoy. Discussion of current events within their books can also help improve critical thinking skills. We will publish a reading list prior to the start of the program. This will be conducted at Whaleyville Recreation Center.

- Buttons and Bowties: Kids and parents can come together dressed in their finest attire to enjoy a prom themed event filled with music, fun, and food.  

- Cookies with Santa: Join us at the East Suffolk Recreation Center for a morning of fun-filled cookie decorations, holiday crafts, and making cookies with Santa! Children ages 2-10 are welcome to participate in this event.

- Kid's Only PJ Party and Movie Night: This event will bring children together for a night filled with a children’s movie, wholesome fun, and great activities! Children will be able to wear their favorite pair of pajamas, while interacting and making connections with others. Hot dogs, drinks, and fresh popcorn will be served. Blankets or mats are welcome.

- Fright Night: Join us at East Suffolk and Whaleyville Recreation Center for a spooky night of Halloween fun! Activities will include Halloween crafts, a haunted house, bounce houses, and much more! All ages are welcome to participate.

- Girls Rock: Inspiring girls to be confident leaders featuring guest speakers, team building activities, and peer-to-peer mentoring.

- Holiday Chalk-A-Lot!: Celebrate the holiday with us by turning our East Suffolk Recreation Center sidewalk into an open-air gallery filled with colorful winter season works of chalk art! Kids, teens, and families will have all weekend to create temporary chalk art masterpieces on our sidewalk spaces. Pre-registered participants will have alternating sidewalk spaces for social distancing. Once completed, photos will be uploaded to SPRD social media for followers voting! 

- Holiday Jingle Mingle: Join the Whaleyville Recreation Center for some holiday fun! There will be something for the entire family. Come hang out with us, enjoy some hot cocoa or coffee, fun games and crafts as we await the arrival of Mr. Saint Nic! Children can participate in the event with a donation of one new, unwrapped toy per child that will be donated to a local charity.  

- Home Away From Home (Homeschool): Come out to Whaleyville Recreation Center to take a load off from schoolwork and join us for an hour and a half of activities that include arts and crafts, snacks, and more! This program is designed with homeschoolers in mind as we want to encourage movement, thinking, and new friendships.

- Preschool Play: Here at Whaleyville Recreation Center, we want to keep your toddlers and youngsters active and engaged as we offer various activities, snacks, games, and more. Pre-registration is required.

Office On Youth

- Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun: It's time for brunch and fun with your girls! Enjoy crafts, guest speakers, nail painting, and more! 

- Teen Summit: 

- Therapeutic Social Hour: A Therapeutic recreation event for those with special needs and abilities. Learn and play through various social activities!

- Karaoke Nights: A Therapeutic recreation event for those with special needs and abilities. Come sing your heart out to your favorite tunes with family and friends!

Senior Programs

- Active Adult Senior's Walking Club: Then come join our Active Adult Senior Walking Club for adults ages 50 and up. The walking club will meet twice a week for a scheduled walk at various locations throughout the community. Transportation will be provided at 9:00 a.m. for Whaleyville Community Center and 9:30 a.m. from East Suffolk Recreation Center or participants can meet the club at each weekly site.

- Bridge Program: Come on out and play a game of Bridge with peers!

- Senior Program: Visit us from 10:00am - 2:00pm at one of our Recreation Centers!

Special Events

- Active Adult Holiday Gala: Put on your Sunday best and head out on the dance floor at our annual Holiday Gala!

- Drive-In Movie: Grab your friends/family and drive in to Bennett’s Creek Park to catch a movie!

- Eggstravaganza: Peter Cottontail is paying a visit to all the kiddos! "HOP" on in for this exciting event and bring the family!

- Festival of Lights: We are spreading the spirit at our annual drive through at Sleepy Hole Park! Enjoy the shimmery and festive lights with good company!

- Grand Illumination: Get in the Holiday spirit by lighting the tree and spreading holiday cheer at our annual Grand Illumination 

- Holiday Parade: Check out our annual Holiday parade in downtown Suffolk!

- Taste of Suffolk: Our Annual Taste of Suffolk is a full day filled with yummy food and the best company in downtown!

- TGIF Summer Concert Series: Kick off the summer and enjoy our live musicians/bands at our Annual TGIF Summer concert series! We have food vendors, adult beverages, giveaways, and so much more!


Suffolk Art Gallery

- Annual Photography Exhibit Call for Entries: : Be a part of our 38th Annual Juried Photography Exhibit! Open to all professional and amateur photographers. All styles of photography in which traditional and digital processes were integral to the creation of the work will be accepted. Photography must be originals executed and altered by the photographer only.

- Exhibits: We have seasonal exhibits (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer). You can find more information about our exhibits by emailing areavis@suffolkva.us

- Poetry, Prose, and Pizza: : Join the Suffolk Art Gallery, the Suffolk Art League, and host Nathan Richardson for this Open Mic event. Poets, writers, musicians, spoken word, and more are welcome. Present your own original works, or favorites by others. Not a writer or musician? Come listen to others, enjoy a slice of pizza, and visit the Gallery in a relaxed, open, and comfortable environment. 

- Teen and Tween Art Meet-up: - One Thursday a month join Suffolk Public Libraries at the Suffolk Art Gallery for a special tour of the current exhibit on display as well as an interactive craft or activity connected to the exhibit. Each month will have a new theme and a new special topic. 

- Virtual Art Wednesdays: One Wednesday a month join the Suffolk Art Gallery for a virtual workshop we were explore different art techniques and mediums. Each month will introduce a new project and activity that participants can follow along with at home! All virtual workshops will be published at 10:00 am on our social media and will include a materials list as well as an instructional video. 

 Summer Camp

- Art Camp: Our art camp is designed to bring out the creativity in you! Sign up for one of our sessions and see what you're made of!

- Camp Limitless: A Therapeutic recreation summer camp for children and adolescents with special needs and abilities! 

- Discover Your Future: Teens will enjoy clubs, games, sports, crafts, and field trips. Camp includes breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Let's have some fun at East Suffolk Recreation Center!

- Hoops 4 life: This camp will improve basketball skills while addressing important life lessons and values. In addition to basketball training, there will be incredible guest speakers, video lessons, and workshops. 

- Hook A Kid On Golf: an introductory clinic that covers all aspects of the sport of golf from rules and etiquette to course management.

- Outdoor Explorers Adventure Camp: This camp is for kids who enjoy exploring The Great Outdoors. Activities include hiking, canoeing, swimming, zip lining, and archery! Campers will learn outdoor skills such as natural shelter building; plant and animal identification; and how to start and tend to a fire. All gear is provided for each daily activity. Campers should come dressed in active wear, closed toe shoes, and sunscreen applied! Pack a lunch with an extra snack and water to stay fueled for a day full of adventures!

- Planet Recreation: Planet Recreation is available at all locations on a two week period per session.
