Sign Regulations

On July 21, 2021, City Council passed an ordinance updating Section 31-714, Sign Regulations, in the Unified Development Ordinance.  One of the most significant changes to the sign regulations is the elimination of permits for temporary signs, which include banners, feather flags,  yard signs, and special event signs.  Temporary signs shall be displayed for no more than 90 days.

For permanent sign applications, please visit the Community Development Division Application Page.  Separate applications and review processes exist for new signs and sign refacing. Please contact the Community Development Division at 757-514-4150 for more information.

Please also note that signs in the Historic Conservation Overlay District require a certificate of appropriateness prior to the approval of permanent sign permits through the Community Development Division.  For more information, please visit the Historic Overlay District webpage.  The certificate of appropriateness application is available from the Planning Division Applications webpage. Please contact the Planning Division at 757-514-4060 for more information on the  Historic Conservation Overlay District.
