VIMS provides technical and scientific assistance to regulatory agencies on activities that involve subaqueous bottoms and wetlands, as well as conducting research and outreach. The institute provides technical assistance, often at no cost, to property owners whose development plans have impacts on coastal resources. VIMS involvement in the JPA process is strictly advisory. Advice generally involves estimation of environmental impacts and recommendation of alternatives or modifications to minimize these impacts.
