Mayor Linda T. Johnson was elected to Suffolk City Council in 2000. She represented the Sleepy Hole Borough for two terms and became Suffolk's first female Mayor on July 5, 2006. Mayor Johnson made history once again when she became Suffolk's first directly elected Mayor on January 5, 2009. She was re-elected in 2012 and in 2016.


Mayor Johnson began her career in real estate in 1986. She is currently with Berkshire Hathaway Towne Realty and has been a member of the Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors since 1986.


Mayor Johnson serves on the City Council's Finance Committee, the City Council's Education Committee, the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization, and is a past member of the Virginia Workforce Council. She is also the Chair of the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission, and the former Chair of the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance. Mayor Johnson was appointed to Governor Terry McAuliffe's Transition Council on Local Government.


Mayor Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Journalism from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond, with a minor in Sociology.
