The Suffolk Department of Emergency Management advises that a heavy band of snow is still moving into our City this morning, and snow is projected to continue falling for several hours in many areas.  Snow totals thus far vary widely across the City. 

Public Works crews continue working around the clock in 12-hour shifts focusing on our primary roadways at this time in addition to some problematic secondary roads, however, due to heavy winds and snow drifting, multiple passes by snow plows are needed.  They remind our citizens to stay off the roads, as it allows their crews to do their jobs more quickly and more efficiently and keeps our roadways accessible for emergency vehicles.  Blowing snow is also causing very low visibility, making it even more dangerous for drivers. 

Approximately 550 tons of salt/sand has been applied as of 5:30 a.m., however, salt is not effective once temperatures fall below 15 degrees.

Suffolk Police have responded to 12 accidents since last evening, and they attribute these low numbers to the fact that citizens are heeding their warnings to stay off the roads.  

Suffolk Parks & Recreation has advised that due to weather conditions all of the athletic games and practices scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled.
