[ARCHIVED] SUFFOLK CITY OFFICES OPENING ON DELAY THURSDAY, JANUARY 18

City of Suffolk facilities will open on a delay at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, January 18, 2018 due to impact of winter weather. With Suffolk Public Schools closed tomorrow, before and after school care at Suffolk Parks & Recreation Joint Use Facilities will not be held.

Refuse and recycling collection will run as normally scheduled on Thursday, January 18, 2018. A decision on operations of Suffolk Transit will be made early Thursday morning based on an evaluation of road conditions at that time.

Public Works personnel are fully engaged with laying down salt and abrasives on bridges and overpasses. Staff began spreading brine on primary and secondary roadways on Monday, January 15 and continued reapplying brine prior to the start of snow fall today. To report roadway issues, citizens can contact Public Works at 514-7600.

For afterhours/weekend requests for emergency Public Utilities Services, call 757-514-7000 (broken water pipes, etc.).

Suffolk Police note that 31 motor vehicle accidents were reported during the period from 3 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. today. Roadways are slick but motorists are heeding warnings to stay off the roads and calls for service have dropped off considerably.  Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel assisted with several of the accidents today.

The City of Suffolk remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until 11 p.m. tonight according to the National Weather Service. The advisory calls for additional snow accumulation up to one inch with storm totals reaching 1 to 3 inches. Motorists are advised to use caution if having to drive as periods of snow will cause travel difficulties with snow covered roads and limited visibilities.
