In observance of the New Year’s holiday, Suffolk City offices will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019 and will reopen for normal operations on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. The City observes all State-designated holidays. New Year’s Day is considered a holiday for the Commonwealth of Virginia and all State offices are closed on this day.
For the period of January 1 through January 5, 2019, trash collection will run on a one-day delay with Tuesday’s route picked up on Wednesday, Wednesday’s route on Thursday, Thursday’s route on Friday, and Friday’s route on Saturday. TFC Recycling will also follow the holiday schedule with a one-day delay schedule for the period of January 1 through January 5, 2019. Businesses located in the Downtown Business Overlay District (DBOD) will have their collection day run on Wednesday and Friday. The Suffolk Public Works Department reminds you that trash must be placed at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection. From December 26, 2018 through January 5, 2019, the Suffolk Department of Public Works Refuse Division will collect all Christmas trees and boxes as a special collection. During these two weeks, Christmas trees and boxes will not be counted towards the 12 free special collections. Any Christmas trees put out for collection after January 5, 2019 will be picked up but will count as a special collection. The trees and boxes will need to be placed at the curb the same day as the residence’s regular collection. The trees do not have to be secured and the boxes do not have to be collapsed.
The Southeastern Public Safety Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station in Suffolk will be closed on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. The Regional Landfill will be closed Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Both the Transfer Station in Suffolk and Regional Landfill will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019.
All Suffolk Joint Use Recreation Centers (Mack Benn Jr., Booker T. Washington, Kings Fork, Creekside, Northern Shores, and Oakland) will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019. The East Suffolk Recreation Center and Whaleyville Community Center will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019. The Suffolk Parks & Recreation Administration Office will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Suffolk’s four major parks – Lone Star Lakes, Constant’s Wharf, Sleepy Hole, and Bennett's Creek -- will remain open during the holiday; however, no park attendant will be on duty.
The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
Suffolk Transit will not operate on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
All Suffolk City Libraries (Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk, Chuckatuck) will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Library locations will reopen at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.
The Suffolk Tourism Visitor Center and Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum will close at 3 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2018 and will remain closed on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
The Suffolk Executive Airport terminal will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019. The airfield and self-service fuel island will remain open during this time. Suffolk BBQ at the Airport will be closed Monday, December 31, 2018 and Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
