[ARCHIVED] Public Works Refuse – Special Bulk Collection Changes

The Suffolk Department of Public Works is announcing changes to special bulk collection services.  Special bulk collection refers to the removal of large bulky items and other items that are too large to fit in the container such as:

•Appliances

•Boxes

•Debris

•Furniture

•Mattresses

•Yard waste

Effective July 1, 2019, residents receive twelve (12) special bulk collections a year of up to 12 cubic yards (6 foot wide by 6 foot high by 9 foot long) for each household at no charge.  A fee of $47.50 is charged for a special bulk collection exceeding 12 cubic yards up to 24 cubic yards.  While it is not necessary to schedule a collection of 1 to 12 cubic yards, residents are required to prepay the fee of $47.50 if the pile exceeds 12 cubic yards.  Please place your items curbside no earlier than 24 hours before your regular refuse collection day but no later than 7 a.m. on the day of collection.  Residents who would like to know how many bulk collections they have remaining can contact the Suffolk Public Works Refuse Division at 757-514-7630.

Residents who require more than twelve bulk collections per year will pay a fee of $47.50 for 1 to 12 cubic yards, or $105.00 for 13 to 24 cubic yards, for each additional collection depending on size.  These additional bulk collections must be prepaid.  A resident must call the Suffolk Public Works Refuse Division at 757-514-7630 to schedule the collection. Residents need to pay for the service a minimum of 48 hours prior to their regular refuse collection day in order to ensure the bulk items are collected on that day.  Payment options include:

•Pay in person at one of the City Treasurer's Offices. A credit/debit card fee is applied.

•Call the City Treasurer's office at 757514-4275. A credit/debit card fee is applied.

•By mailing payment to the City Treasurer:

•            1 to 12 cubic yards (twelve collections at no charge)

•           1 to 12 cubic yards - $47.50 (after twelve collections have been used)

•           13 to 24 cubic yards - $47.50 (before twelve collections have been used)

•           13 to 24 cubic yards - $105.00 (after twelve collections have been used)

The eviction fee remains at $170.00 and 14 cubic yard containers are still available for $120.00 per day, Monday to Friday, and $170.00 per weekend.
