There
are over 5,500 acres of tidal wetlands in the City of Suffolk. Tidal wetlands
serve as spawning and nursery grounds for a variety of marine life. In addition
to their habitat value, these areas also assist in flood control, improve
water quality, reduce erosion, and serve as an important food source for
marine and inland wildlife.
The Suffolk Wetlands Board is a seven member body, appointed by the City Council, responsible for the review of requests for permits for the alteration, development, or use of wetlands. The Wetlands Board also is responsible for the enforcement of the regulations, investigation of unauthorized activities affecting wetlands, and the rectification of violations.
