Oderzo, Italy
Between Venice and the beautiful Dolomite mountains lies Oderzo, a small, friendly city of 16,000 people. Situated on the Monticano River, Oderzo is known as the "Archeological City" as its land was crossed by an old Roman road built in 148 BC. The municipality's archaeological ruins are well-preserved in its Civic Museum of Archeology, one of the oldest museums in Italy. Oderzo's Romans name, Opiterguim, means " the village of the market" and today, it remains a popular up-scale shopping mecca. Oderzo, known as the city of the old and the new, comes alive with artist, craftsmen, fashion shows, festivals, shops, and restaurants. Once a year, the town stages outdoor opera in the piazza, complete with elaborate sets and costuming.
Symbolizing the strong friendship between our two cities are Suffolk's Obici-Oderzo Fountain, designed by Oderzo architect, Paolo Rosso and a Mr. Peanut statue which stands proudly at Amedeo Obici High School in Oderzo.
