    Location

    Taxes are a certainty

    Virginia's tax structure is recognized as one of the fairest in the country, and Suffolk's fair tax structure is a natural extension. Below is information you'll need to know about taxes, as well as information about permits, licenses and fees.

    Personal Property Taxes

    Personal Property tax is due December 5th of each year. Current rates are applicable through June 30th, 2001. ***Current rates are available at "Web address to this tax info on Treasurer's site" -or- you will have to update this page annually. Personal property tax may be paid in the Treasurer's Office in the Municipal Center in downtown, call (757) 923-3600.

    The rates are as follows:

  • Autos: $4.25/100 of loan value.
  • Boats: $1.50/100 of the blue book value.
  • Recreational Vehicles: $ 1.50/100 of NADA book value.
  • Airplanes: $.58/100 of value.
  • Machinery and Tools: $3.15 based on 20% of cost first 5 years and $3.15 based on 10% of cost after 5 years.

    Real Estate Taxes

    Real Estate taxes are due in two installments: June 5th and December 5th of each year. Current rates are available at "Web address to this tax info on Treasurer's site". For more information, call (757) 923-3600

    The rates are as follows:

  • City Wide Tax Rate: $1.03/100
  • Suffolk Taxing District: $1.19/100
  • Route 17 Taxing: $1.29/100
  • Mosquito Taxing: $1.065/100

    Vehicle License Tax A city decal must be displayed next to the state inspection sticker on any motor vehicle owned and operated within the city of Suffolk. The vehicle must be registered with the Commissioner of Revenue and the sticker purchased from the City Treasurer. Vehicle license are due February 15th of each year.

    During the city decal renewal season, several satellite stations are set up around the city to issue decals. The locations are announced in the Suffolk-Herald and The Virginia Pilot newspaper and on Municipal Channel 8 on Charter Cable.

    Mail-in renewals are encouraged, and a 24-hour drop box is located outside the Municipal Center.

    Sales Tax Rate

    The tax rate is 4.5 percent (3.5 percent state and 1 percent local tax).

    Revenue is deposited to the state's general fund. One-third of the 3 percent state tax is returned to the localities of Virginia for education. The amount of state tax each locality receives is based on the locality's school age population.

    The 1 percent local tax is distributed to the localities for general operating purpose and is based on the amount of sales in that locality.

    Business & Personal Licenses

    All business and professional operations must purchase a license before operating in the City of Suffolk. Business license are due March 1 of each year and sold by the Commissioner of the Revenue after a zoning clearance has been issued by the Department of Neighborhood Development Services, 923-2140.

    Other Licenses, Permits and Fees

    Dog license may be purchased from the City Treasurer, 923-3600.

    Building permits may be purchased from the Department of Neighborhood Development Services, 923-2140.

    Marriage licenses may be purchased at the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court, 923-2251.

    Hand gun and concealed weapons permits may be purchased at the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court, 923-2251
