On behalf of the Suffolk City Council, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Suffolk City Council Web page. We are pleased that you have taken the time to visit the City's Web site and that you were interested in learning more about the Suffolk City Council. Our locality is committed to making information accessible to the public in a user-friendly format.
Whether we realize it or not, government that has the most influence on our lives daily occurs at the local level. Most of us have a positive interaction with local government, and we see it in action every day. You encounter your local municipal government in action each time you drive down a well maintained street, visit a public library, enjoy drinking quality water, or feel that sense of safety and peace of mind wherever you go. The employees of the City of Suffolk are dedicated public servants. They truly understand that public service at the local level is all about neighbors serving neighbors. Others serve in their own ways - whether they are elected or appointed as volunteers to serve on a board or commission - and they are all just like you.
The City of Suffolk offers both small town charm and big city amenities - a rare and pleasing combination - and our quaint streets are dotted with unique shops and family restaurants. Our downtown offers a rich blend of historic landmarks, and we hope you will visit such attractions as Riddick's Folly House Museum - an official Virginia Civil War Trail site - the Seaboard Station Railroad Museum, the Suffolk Art Gallery, or the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge - a haven for birdwatchers and hikers.
Within our 434 square miles, you will find five golf courses, horseback riding, fishing, boating, kayaking, and even skydiving. Suffolk also honors heritage and community spirit with annual festivals and events such as the Nansemond Indian Tribal Pow-Wow, Suffolk Farmers' Market, and Driver Days Fall Festival. Suffolk is known as the home of Planters Peanuts, and each year we celebrate our agricultural legacy with the annual Suffolk Peanut Fest.
Suffolk is a thriving community, embraced by a rich past best represented by its historic structures, stoic symbols of Suffolk's beginning. We are a family-friendly community that offers unparalleled southern hospitality. I encourage you to lose yourself in the charm of Suffolk.
