    Tips on Testifying

Dress appropriately and conservatively. The way you look and act affects the way your testimony is received. Proper courtroom attire is important. Do not appear unclean or unkempt. Do not wear shorts or halter tops. It is often cold in the courtrooms so you may want to bring a jacket or sweater with you.
    • Be courteous. Do not become angry or argue. Keep calm; be polite and patient.

    • Understand the question. Don't be afraid to ask that a question be repeated if you didn't understand or hear the question clearly.

    • Speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard and understood. Do not nod or shake your head to give a "yes" or "no" response.

    • Answer only the questions that you are asked.

    • Do not guess or make up answers.

    • If one of the lawyers objects to a question you are asked, do not answer until the judge has ruled on the objection.

    • ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH. Just truthfully answer to the best of your memory. If you don't know the answer, say, "I don't know".

    • Be prepared to wait. Our courts are busy and handle many cases every day. You may have to wait. Be patient --- the case will be called.
