Mark R. Outlaw, Suffolk Fire Chief
A lifelong resident of Suffolk, Chief Outlaw started his public safety career with the city in 1977 as a frontline fire fighter. He progressed through the ranks of the Suffolk Fire Department from Fire Fighter, Lieutenant, Captain, to his appointment as Fire Chief in January 1994, becoming the youngest Chief appointed in Virginia. He graduated with highest honors from Tidewater Community College and attended Hampton University for a degree in Fire Administration. As a proactive, team oriented Fire Chief; he has successfully increased staffing and technology to enhance the safety and efficiency of the department and improve the quality of life in Suffolk.
A strong advocate of education and community involvement, Chief Outlaw participates in a number of advisory boards and civic activities. He has received numerous honors during his illustrious career including Jaycees Outstanding Young Man Award, 5 City of Suffolk Distinguished Service Awards and 2 City Manager Commendations.
