The Virginia Freedom of Information Act specifically applies to public records that currently exist. A public record is a writing or recording that is owned, prepared by, or in the possession of a public body or its employees or agent in the transaction of public working. Requests for public records, FOIA requests, should be directed to the FOIA Office.
The Virginia Freedom of Information Act is designed for residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the media that serve the citizens of Virginia. The name and address of the person making a request is necessary in determining residency.
