The Investigations Division consists of Criminal Investigations, Special Investigations, Neighborhood Enforcement Teams, Forensics, and Criminal Intelligence and Analysis. The main focus of the Investigations Division is to investigate reported criminal activity in the City of Suffolk. This activity includes crimes against persons, crimes against property, vice and narcotics related crimes, and gang related crimes. Our Forensic Unit is the scientific arm of our agency, responsible for the overall collection of evidence and processing of crime scenes.
The Investigations Division is strongly committed to crime prevention, providing awareness and information services on a variety of topics. These include, among others, gang awareness, identity theft, fraud, and Internet safety.
The Investigations Division is led by Captain Dean Smith. Captain Smith joined the Suffolk Police Department in 1989. In 1997 Captain Smith was promoted to Sergeant followed by a promotion in 2000 to Lieutenant. In 2004 he earned his current rank as Captain. Captain Smith has commanded both police precincts as well as the Administrative Division before being assigned as the Commanding Officer of the Criminal Investigative Division. Captain Smith is a graduate of the 209th session of the FBI National Academy and is a past President of the Virginia Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates.
