Youth Public Safety Academy

2012 Youth Public Safety Academy Brochure

The Youth Public Safety Academy is an annual eleven week after school program for at risk youth. The program is a cooperative partnership between the Suffolk Police Department, Suffolk Department of Fire and Rescue and the Suffolk Department of Parks and Recreation. Students engage in hands on learning with members of the City’s Public Safety staff, learning what it is like to be a firefighter, police officer, or CSI technician. The program is designed to reinforce team work, cultivate an interest in public service, and encourage better decision making, while fostering positive adult mentoring relationships.

The program is held each Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30pm to 7:00pm and youth are treated each night to dinner cooked by members of the Department of Fire and Rescue. Youth who are at risk are encouraged to apply. Risk factors include but are not limited to the following: low income, poor school performance, disciplinary problems, special needs, or single parent homes.
Transportation to and from the program is provided and there is no cost to participate.
