Selection Process

The Suffolk Police Department will hire only the most qualified candidates who successfully meet the following.
Sworn Positions
- Must be at least twenty and one half years old at the time of application
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be a United States citizen for the past ten years prior to application
- Must not meet any listed automatic disqualifiers
- Must have an electronic application on file
- Must successfully pass a physical ability test
- Must successfully pass a written examination
- Must successfully pass a background investigation
- Must successfully pass a polygraph examination
- Must successfully pass an oral review panel
- Must successfully pass a chief’s interview
- Must successfully pass a psychological examination
- Must successfully pass a medical examination
Non Sworn Positions
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be a United States citizen for the past ten years prior to application
- Must not meet any listed automatic disqualifiers
- Must have an electronic application on file
- Must successfully pass an oral review panel
- Must successfully pass any tests required of the position
- Dispatcher applicants: Typing Test and Criticall Test
- Call Taker Applicants: Typing Test
- Record Technician applicants: Typing Test
- Must successfully pass a background investigation
- Must successfully pass a chief’s interview
- Certain non-sworn positions must successfully pass a psychological examination
- Certain non-sworn positions must successfully pass a medical examination
