Selection Process

The Suffolk Police Department will hire only the most qualified candidates who successfully meet the following.

Sworn Positions

• Must be at least twenty and one half years old at the time of application
• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
• Must be a United States citizen for the past ten years prior to application
• Must not meet any listed automatic disqualifiers
• Must have an electronic application on file
• Must successfully pass a physical ability test
• Must successfully pass a written examination
• Must successfully pass a background investigation
• Must successfully pass a polygraph examination
• Must successfully pass an oral review panel
• Must successfully pass a chief’s interview
• Must successfully pass a psychological examination
• Must successfully pass a medical examination

Non Sworn Positions

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
• Must be a United States citizen for the past ten years prior to application
• Must not meet any listed automatic disqualifiers
• Must have an electronic application on file
• Must successfully pass an oral review panel
• Must successfully pass any tests required of the position
• Dispatcher applicants: Typing Test and Criticall Test
• Call Taker Applicants: Typing Test
• Record Technician applicants: Typing Test
• Must successfully pass a background investigation
• Must successfully pass a chief’s interview
• Certain non-sworn positions must successfully pass a psychological examination
• Certain non-sworn positions must successfully pass a medical examination
