Feb. 6 (2:30pm):
The City of Suffolk forecast in holding true as the snow has begun. Outside temperatures are at 33 degrees at the EOC and will continue to fall to the 20s overnight. According to the National Weather Service-Wakefield this morning, it will continue through the afternoon, taper off this evening, and wind up around 11 p.m. According to the forecaster, Suffolk is expected to receive around 1" before ending this evening. That's down about .9 inches from yesterday's forecast.
Road Conditions...those roads experiencing urban flooding and tidal flooding could encounter freezing tonight and tomorrow as temperatures dip to the low 20s. Tidal flooding closed North Main Street for 2 hrs this morning. The next high tide is 4:34 p.m. Tidal flooding can be expected similar.
Feb. 6 (9:15am):
The City of Suffolk is in phase 2 of the current winter storm and is experiencing a period of light drizzle. Later this morning, much colder air will move in, changing the precipitation type to a mix and then all snow. Temperature will fall to around 30 degrees by 5 p.m. It will be breezy, with a north wind between 15 and 22 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. The next high tide will be at 4:34 p.m., running about 3 feet above the normal high tide. Expect minor to moderate flooding for the Nansemond River at North Main Street. 1.5 to 2 feet less than the November Nor’easter.
The City of Suffolk as well as most of southeast Virginia is under a Winter Weather Advisory. Rain will change over to rain/ snow mix around 10am, then snow after 1pm. with a temperature falling to around 30 degrees by 5 p.m. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. The chief concern for tonight and Sunday night is temperature in the lower 20s creating problems on the roads and bridges.
