The City of Suffolk is rolling out four types of Traffic Enforcement Cameras:
- Red Light Photo Enforcement Cameras
- School Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras
- School Bus Stop-Arm Enforcement Cameras
- Work Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras
The City of Suffolk has collaborated with a private vendor, Altumint, to install and maintain the technology. The Suffolk Police Department is responsible for reviewing all violations to determine if a citation and fine will be issued.
RED LIGHT PHOTO ENFORCEMENT CAMERAS
Nine intersections throughout Suffolk will be outfitted with red light enforcement cameras installed. Traffic enforcement signage will be visible to drivers and a 30-day warning period will be in effect before cameras go live later this spring. During the warning period, violators will receive a cautionary letter mailed to their residence. After the warning period, violators will receive a $50.00 fine.

SCHOOL ZONE SPEED ENFORCEMENT CAMERAS AND SCHOOL BUS STOP-ARM ENFORCEMENT CAMERAS
School Zone speed enforcement cameras and school bus stop-arm enforcement cameras are scheduled to go live for the start of the 2024 school year. Motorists speeding in a school zone during designated school hours or illegally passing a school bus may receive a citation and fine. Cameras are currently being installed and motorists can expect a warning letter if caught before they go live this fall. Violators speeding through a school zone will receive a $100.00 fine. Violators passing a stopped school bus will receive a $250.00 fine.
SCHOOL BUS STOP-ARM CAMERAS WILL START ISSUING VIOLATIONS STARTING SEPTEMBER 4, 2023.
SCHOOL ZONES WITH ENFORCEMENT CAMERAS. VIOLATIONS WILL BE ISSUED STARTING AUGUST 23, 2023 FOR NANSEMOND SUFFOLK ACADEMY SCHOOL ZONES AND SEPTEMBER 4, 2023 FOR SUFFOLK PUBLIC SCHOOL ZONES.

WORK ZONE SPEED ENFORCEMENT CAMERAS
Work Zone speed enforcement cameras will be moved throughout work zones across the City of Suffolk. Violators speeding in a work zone will receive a $100.00 fine.

PENALTIES
$50.00 fine for Red Light Running violation per Suffolk Code 86.317 and VAC 15.2-968.1
$100.00 fine for School Speed Zone violation per Suffolk Code 86.318(b)(1) and VAC 46.2-882.1
$250.00 fine for School Bus Arm violation per Suffolk Code 86.318(b) and VAC 46.2-844 (A)
$100.00 fine for Work Zone Speed violation per Suffolk code 86.401 (b)(1) and VAC 46.2-882.1.
