Selection Process

The Suffolk Police Department will hire only the most qualified candidates who successfully meet the following criteria.


Sworn Positions


  • Must be at least 20 and 1/2 years old at the time of application
  • Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 years. Lawful residents of the United States must be in good standing in the citizenship naturalization process
  • Must have an electronic application on file
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must not meet any listed automatic disqualifiers
  • Must successfully pass a:
    • Background investigation
    • Chief's interview
    • Medical examination
    • Oral review panel
    • Physical ability test
    • Polygraph examination
    • Psychological examination
    • Written examination

Non Sworn Positions


  • Call Taker applicants: typing test
  • Certain non-sworn positions must successfully pass a medical examination
  • Certain non-sworn positions must successfully pass a psychological examination
  • Dispatcher applicants: typing test and criti-call test
  • Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 years. Lawful residents of the United States must be in good standing in the citizenship naturalization process
  • Must have an electronic application on file
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must not meet any listed automatic disqualifiers
  • Must successfully pass any tests required of the position
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation
  • Must successfully pass a chief's interview
  • Must successfully pass an oral review panel
  • Record Technician applicants: typing test
