Fences

Residential or Walls in Single-Family Residential Districts Provided That: (Section 31-701 (B)(10) of the Unified Development Ordinance)



A. A fence or wall not more than 6 feet in height may be located in any required side yard or rear yard other than a required yard adjacent to a street. A fence or wall not more than 6 feet in height may be located in any planting screen/no access easement adjacent to a street serving a double frontage and/or reverse frontage lot. Except as allowed above, no fence or wall which creates a solid screen may exceed two and one-half (2-1/2) feet in height in any required yard adjacent to a street, except that fences having a uniform open area of 50 percent or more may be erected to a maximum height of 4 feet in such required yards. Height shall be measured from the average ground level adjacent to the fence or wall. No fence or wall shall encroach the visibility triangle.

B. The above standards shall not be deemed to prohibit any fences or walls which may be required for screening, security or safety purposes by other sections of this Ordinance as determined by the Administrator; and

C. The "finished" side of any fence shall face outward towards surrounding properties and rights-of-way.

D. No barbed wire or electrified or similar type fences shall be permitted except in conjunction with a bona fide agricultural operation.

Application Requirements for Residential Fences


  • Email, bring in or mail the following: a completed  New Application for Services - Zoning, survey indicating where the fence will be placed and payment.
  • A Permit Technician will review the application. The Technician will determine if everything is in order
  • The Technician will then issue permit.


Accessory Uses Permitted in Conjunction With Commercial & Industrial Uses.



Fences or walls, provided that: (SECTION 31-701 (c)(1) OF THE UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE)

A. Fences or walls located in side or rear yards shall not exceed 8 feet in height other than yards adjacent to a street;

B. Fences or walls shall not be located in yards adjacent to a street, except as provided for in subsection C below; provided that sight triangle and visibility standards, as established in Street Improvement Standards be observed;

C. The above standards shall not be deemed to prohibit any fences or walls which may be required for screening, security or safety purposes by other sections of this Ordinance, as determined by the Administrator;

D. The site plan shall show the method of construction and anchoring the fence, posts and gate; and

E. The site plan shall clearly show the distance between the fence and the abutting property lines and the distance to the sight line of a street right-of-way intersection. Adequate sight distance shall be maintained.

Application Requirements for Fences Located in Commercial & Industrial Districts


  • Email, bring in or mail the following: a completed Application for Services-Commercial form (PDF), site plan indicating where the fence will be placed, the site plan shall show the method of construction and anchoring the fence posts and gate and payment.
  • A Permit Technician will review the application. The Technician will determine if everything is in order.
  • The Technician will issue permit.
