Council Member Michael D. "Mike" Duman was elected to the Suffolk City Council on November 2, 2010, and was sworn in on January 3, 2011, as the representative for the Chuckatuck Borough. Council Member Duman graduated from Old Dominion University and served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve. His term expires on December 31, 2022.
Prior to his election, Council Member Duman served on the Economic Development Authority. He currently serves on the Western Tidewater Regional Jail Board and is the City Council liaison to the Economic Development Authority. In the past Council Member Duman has served on the Western Tidewater Water Authority, the City School Advisory Committee on Collaborative Fiscal Concerns and the Public Safety Committee.
Council Member Duman began his business career while attending college. He established his first auto dealership in 1980 and became the youngest Ford-Mercury Dealer in the country. He currently operates Mike Duman Auto Sales in Suffolk and was selected the Virginia State Independent Quality Dealer of the Year in 2000. Council Member Duman was recognized by Virginia House Joint Resolution Number 332 for his business acumen and contributions to the community.
Council Member Duman currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Suffolk Humane Society and is a member of the Suffolk Ruritan Club and Elks Lodge #687. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross (Suffolk Chapter) and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Council Member Duman is active in the community donating time and resources to many worthwhile causes.
