1. What is SNAP, and how can I apply?

SNAP is an acronym for - Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)


The SNAP program (formerly Food Stamps) is designed to promote better nutrition for low-income families by increasing their food purchasing power, and assisting families in supplementing their diet. Applications are available at Suffolk DSS during regular office hours, or an application can be mailed to you on the day of your request. For your convenience, you can now apply online from any computer that has Internet access by visiting the new Virginia Department of Social Services website, CommonHelp.

3. What can I buy with SNAP benefits?

You can use SNAP benefits to buy food, or seeds and plants to grow food in your home garden.
The purchase of the following is prohibited with SNAP benefits:
- Alcoholic beverages or tobacco
- Hot foods ready for immediate consumption or foods to be eaten on the store premises
- Pet foods
- Soap, paper products or other non-food items
